How to update your Minecraft Nukkit server

Nukkit is a lightweight, open-source server software for Minecraft Bedrock Edition. Since the game receives regular updates, your server needs to keep up: an outdated build can prevent players on the latest client from connecting, and it deprives you of the most recent bug fixes. Good news: on a server hosted at Lordhosting, updating comes down to replacing a single JAR file from your game panel. Allow five to ten minutes, downtime included.

Prerequisites

• An active Minecraft Nukkit server and your login credentials for the Lordhosting game panel.
• The JAR file of the latest Nukkit build (downloaded in step 2).
• A few minutes of downtime: warn your players before you start, as the update requires a full server shutdown.
• A recent backup, which we will create in the very first step.

Step 1: back up your server

Before touching anything, put your data somewhere safe. From your panel, open the "Backups" tab and start a new backup. As an extra precaution, you can also download the "worlds" and "plugins" folders to your computer via the "File manager". If anything goes wrong during the update, you will be able to restore your server in a few clicks instead of rebuilding everything.

Step 2: download the latest version of Nukkit

First, you need to download the latest version of Nukkit from the project's official continuous integration server. Open the latest successful build and grab the JAR file listed in the artifacts (usually named "nukkit-1.0-SNAPSHOT.jar").

Keep this file at hand: it is the one you will upload to your server in the next step.

Step 3: replace the JAR file on your panel

Next, go to your game panel, log in, and follow these steps:

1. Stop your server with the "Stop" button at the top of the console and wait until it has fully shut down. Never replace the JAR of a running server.
2. Click on the "File manager" tab to access your server files.
3. Delete the "nukkit-1.0-SNAPSHOT.jar" file: this is the server's old executable. Your worlds, plugins and configuration files stay untouched.
4. Press the "Upload" button at the top of your page and select the file you just downloaded. Make sure the new file has exactly the same name as the old one: that is the name the startup command looks for. Rename it from the File manager if needed.
5. Start your server with the "Start" button.

Step 4: check that everything works

Once the server is back up, watch the console during startup: Nukkit should load your worlds and plugins without showing any errors. Then connect with an up-to-date Minecraft Bedrock client, take a walk around the map and test your main plugins (permissions, protection, minigames, etc.). If everything responds normally, the update is complete.

Common issues

The server no longer starts after the update. In the vast majority of cases, the new JAR file does not have exactly the same name as the old one, so the startup command cannot find it. Open the "File manager", rename the file to match the original ("nukkit-1.0-SNAPSHOT.jar"), then restart the server.

A plugin shows errors in the console. Some plugins do not immediately catch up with new Nukkit builds. Identify the faulty plugin in the log, then update it from its download page or temporarily remove it from the "plugins" folder before restarting.

Players still cannot connect. If Minecraft Bedrock has just received an update, a compatible Nukkit build may take a little while to arrive. Check regularly whether a newer build is available, then repeat the procedure above. If you are stuck, contact our support team by ticket or via Discord.
