Star Rupture: review and full test 2026 (early access)

Our take on Star Rupture (Creepy Jar) after 20h of play: addictive loop, coop multiplayer, strong and weak points. Verdict 7.5/10.

TL;DR

Star Rupture is Satisfactory in an open world with hostile aliens. A promising early access with an addictive gameplay loop, a few bugs to polish, and ideal for coop play with friends on a dedicated server. Score: 7.5/10.

Released in early access on January 6, 2026 on Steam, Star Rupture is the new game from Creepy Jar, the Polish studio behind the success of Green Hell (5 million copies sold). A mix of survival, building and automation, the game hooked us for a solid 20 hours. Here's our verdict, with an angle only we can really cover: the multiplayer experience on a dedicated server.

What is Star Rupture?

Star Rupture is a survival + building + automation game in an open world, playable solo or in coop with up to 4 players. The scenario: you're sent to Arcadia-7, a hostile planet colonized by corporations fighting over its rare resources. Your job: extract, automate, and survive the Ruptures — periodic cataclysms that transform the environment and unleash alien creatures.

The key figures:

  • Early access release: January 6, 2026 on PC (Steam)
  • Developer: Creepy Jar (Poland)
  • PEGI: 16 — violence and combat against aliens
  • Multiplayer: coop up to 4 players
  • Steam price: about €30
  • Official page: store.steampowered.com/app/2583880/StarRupture/

If you had to sum up the game in one phrase: "Satisfactory + Subnautica + a bit of Risk of Rain". The factory building of Satisfactory, the environmental hostility of Subnautica, and the cyclical enemy waves of Risk of Rain. The combo works better than feared.

What we liked

After 20 hours of play in solo and coop, here's what stood out positively:

  • Addictive gameplay loop: extract → refine → automate → explore further → unlock new tech. The classic "just 10 more minutes" that turns into 4 hours.
  • The Rupture cycle: three different environments alternate (calm, unstable, chaotic). Tension rises progressively, and it changes everything compared to a linear Satisfactory.
  • Coop multiplayer up to 4 players: genuinely fun as a group. Role specialization (miner, engineer, defense) gives meaning to the coop. We'll come back to this.
  • Decent graphics for an early access: Unreal Engine 5 does a good job, Arcadia-7's atmosphere is believable, the alien landscapes are gorgeous.
  • Well-paced contract progression: each mission unlocks part of the tech tree, which avoids the feeling of running in circles.
  • Dedicated server available from launch: this is rare in early access, and it's a huge plus for communities. No need to wait 6 months to be able to properly host with friends.

What we liked less

Early access obliges, the game also has its rough edges. The most visible ones:

  • ⚠️ Slow and tedious movement: no clean fast-travel system at the start, sprint consumes a lot of stamina. This is the #1 issue reported by most testers. Creepy Jar announced a fix for late 2026.
  • ⚠️ Combat system still immature: weak feedback, alien AI sometimes weird (they get stuck on geometry), lack of varied arsenal at the start.
  • ⚠️ Insufficient tutorial: the first hours are confusing. Too many elements explained too fast, or not explained at all. Plan to keep a wiki on the side.
  • ⚠️ Some technical bugs: occasional crashes when loading, multiplayer desync, items disappearing. Regular patches, but early access shows.
  • ⚠️ Weak character differentiation: few customization options, classes barely distinct. Your buddies and you all look like reskinned Stormtroopers.

The multiplayer experience — our angle

This is where we come in, because it's our daily job. We've been hosting game servers since 2020 at Lordhosting, and Star Rupture caught our interest specifically for its dedicated support from early access.

How does multiplayer work?

Star Rupture offers a coop up to 4 players. You can play in two ways:

  • Local session: one player hosts from their game client, others join via Steam or by IP. Limit: if the host disconnects, everyone gets kicked and the session is suspended until they come back.
  • Dedicated server: a server runs continuously on an independent machine, accessible 24/7. Your friends can play even when you're not there, your base evolves constantly.

Why a dedicated server changes everything

For a group of friends wanting a real community server, dedicated is non-negotiable. We tested it over 3 weeks, and here's what we took away:

  • Permanent availability: your base and automations run even when nobody's connected. Conveyors advance, contracts progress, the server is alive.
  • No need for the host to be connected: gone is the frustration of "well Kevin's not here, what do we do?". Everyone plays at their own pace.
  • Fixed IP: you give the IP once, never need to share it again at every outage.
  • Stable performance: no FPS drop on the host's client, no overload of their connection. The server is sized for the load.
  • Automatic backups: your base is never lost because of a PC crash.
Good to know

Star Rupture supports dedicated servers from early access. This is extremely rare: most survival/coop games wait for 1.0 to offer this option (cf. Valheim which waited 1 year, Enshrouded several months). Creepy Jar made the right call from the start.

If you're 3 or 4 wanting to dig into the game seriously, we recommend dedicated without hesitation. For a "test between buddies over the weekend" session, local hosting is largely enough.

Who is Star Rupture for?

The game isn't for everyone. Our honest grid:

  • Fans of Satisfactory / Factorio who want challenge and tension. You're going to love it.
  • Groups of friends looking for a coop survival game with a bit of structure. 3-4 player sessions are great.
  • Players who love building and automating: if drawing factory blueprints makes you tick, go for it.
  • ⚠️ Not ideal if you hate early access with bugs. Wait 6 to 12 months if you're allergic to unstable versions.
  • ⚠️ Not suited for console players: PC only, no PlayStation, Xbox or Switch version in sight.

Our final verdict

Overall score: 7.5/10

Star Rupture is a promising early access that lays solid foundations. The gameplay loop is addictive, multiplayer works from launch (rare), and the cyclical Rupture concept brings tension where Satisfactory stayed linear.

Still need to polish the rough edges: tedious movement, immature combat and confusing tutorial. But Creepy Jar has proven itself with Green Hell — we trust them to deliver 1.0 within 18 to 24 months.

Purchase recommendation:

  • Yes if you enjoy Satisfactory, Subnautica or coop survival games.
  • Yes if you're willing to tolerate some bugs in exchange for a fresh concept.
  • No (or wait for 1.0) if you have zero tolerance for early access.
